Kandinsky's abstract paintings in art history

When referring to abstract paintings Wassily Kandinsky is usually the first name that comes to mind.
In fact, the Russian painter is in many ways considered the father of abstract painting. Of course, his path was accomplished in the wake of a road that had already been marked out by other artists before him, but Kandinsky took to its extreme consequences, giving rise to a truly new category of art.

Over the centuries, art had been almost focused on depicting reality as truthfully and realistically as possible. Portraits of noblemen or noblewomen, still lifes, landscapes and garden views, great battles, every artworks was painted as truthful as possible, with exceptional results.

This attitude began to change during the 1800s, when little by little artists began to paint differently, interpreting reality, each according to his or her personal sensibility. Painters began to abandon realistic representation of nature in their paintings. Kandinsly himself made this journey, starting with early landscape paintings inspired by fauvisme, the French avant-garde, painted in an anti-naturalistic manner, with bright colors, totally unnatural, almost an abstraction of landscape.

As the years went by, Kandinsky went further and further with his experimentation, and in the early 1900s his paintings became completely disconnected from the subject represented. They were abstract paintings made only of colors, lines and shapes, pure emotions.
In fact Kandinsky used colors according to the emotions that his painting was supposed to convey, according to a precise theory he had devised. Kandinsky thus completed his artistic journey, giving rise to the movement we call "Abstractionism"

The idea of beauty was no longer bound to nature, but became an abstract concept. An abstract picture made of precise lines, colors and shapes that had to have its own internal balance. Of course, Kandinsky was not alone on this path, other painters accompanied him or followed their own personal path (e.g. Klee or Mondrian) but the birth of abstract art is commonly attributed to Kandinsky
