Petrus Christus (c. 1410/1420 - 1475/1476) was a Flemish painter, active in Bruges from 1444. One of his best known paintings is undoubtedly Portrait of a Young Girl (c. 1470). The innovative value of this painting lies in the fact that the artist, for the first time, portrays the figure of the woman in a half-length pose, with her gaze turned towards the viewer, and no longer places her against an indistinct background (as was customary at the time) but against a defined, detailed, three-dimensional background.
